Dust free grinding in old rail complex

A large dust collector, hired from Kennards Concrete Care, allowed extensive concrete grinding to take place in Sydney's multi-venue arts centre CarriageWorks without disrupting normal activities.

Craig Ball and his team from Polished Concrete Professionals ground 1150 sq m to help create offices for a film studio.

The air inside the section of the former railway carriage and blacksmith workshops was clear despite the operation of a big, 415 volt 600 series planetary grinder, which was also supplied by Kennards Concrete Care.

"Overall, we had to take 5mm off, but some sections were badly pitted so we had to go to 10mm," Craig said.

"That obviously creates a huge amount of dust, but this machine is so effective you have an environment is virtually dust free.

Hiring this equipment is consistent with our approach, which is to use the latest machinery and diamond technology to prepare surfaces for a smooth, highly polished decorative finish.

CarriageWorks is housed in the old Eveleigh rail yards, which were built in the 1880s.

In 2007, it was opened by the NSW Government as a new home for contemporary arts, and serves multiple roles, including studios for the production of the hit TV series, So You Think You can Dance and MasterChef Australia.

Kennards Concrete Care's large dust collector is suitable for high production machines requiring constant suction.

It has a spare 32amp outlet so a grinder or mower can be connected from the one power source. The jet pulse system ensures the filters stay clean maintaining its high suction rates.

The unit weighs 300kg and is 1900mm long, 750mm wide and 1750mm high.

Kennards Concrete Care has opened a new hire centre in Adelaide, adding to locations in Sydney, Brisbane Melbourne and Perth. The Brisbane outlet recently relocated to a new site at Rocklea.

The company has also published a new glove box size edition of its catalogue, detailing a wide range of equipment for concrete related jobs, from demolition, grinding and stripping through to drilling, cutting and cleaning.

It is available free at all hire centres or at: www.concretecare.com.au
